Trip Overview

The Annapurna Circuit Trek is one of the world’s most iconic trekking adventures, offering an incredible blend of cultural immersion, breathtaking Himalayan scenery, and diverse landscapes. This 12-day journey takes you from the bustling streets of Kathmandu to the remote mountain villages of the Annapurna region, passing through lush valleys, high-altitude deserts, and across one of the highest trekking passes in the world.

The adventure begins with your arrival in Kathmandu before embarking on a scenic drive to Dharapani, the gateway to the circuit. From here, the trek gradually ascends through pine forests, charming Gurung villages, and terraced fields with constant views of Annapurna II, Annapurna IV, Lamjung Himal, and other towering peaks.

Highlights of the trek include the beautiful villages of Chame, Upper Pisang, and Manang, where you’ll experience Tibetan-influenced culture, centuries-old monasteries, and traditional stone houses. A rest and acclimatization day in Manang allows you to explore Gangapurna Lake or Braga Monastery while preparing your body for higher altitudes.

The trail then leads to Yak Kharka and Thorong High Camp, before the ultimate challenge—crossing the legendary Thorong La Pass (5,416m). Standing at the pass offers a truly unforgettable moment with panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, stretching into Tibet. The descent takes you to Muktinath, a sacred pilgrimage site for Hindus and Buddhists, known for its eternal flame and 108 stone water spouts.

After completing the high mountain crossing, the journey continues with a long scenic drive to Pokhara, where the serenity of Phewa Lake and the vibrant lakeside atmosphere provide the perfect contrast to your rugged mountain adventure. Finally, you return to Kathmandu to conclude your trek, carrying memories of snow-capped peaks, cultural encounters, and the spirit of the Himalayas.

Choose an itinerary that matches your available time and travel plans.

Popular options include:

  • Standard Annapurna Circuit Trek (12–18 Days)

  • Annapurna Circuit with Poon Hill Extension

Best Time to Travel

Choosing the right season greatly enhances your trekking experience.

Consider:

  • Spring for blooming rhododendrons and pleasant temperatures.
  • Autumn for crystal-clear skies and stable weather.
  • Winter for peaceful trails and snow-covered landscapes.
  • Monsoon only if you're comfortable with rain and changing trail conditions.

Budget Planning

Plan your overall budget before confirming your trek.

Your budget should include:

  • Trek package cost
  • Nepal Tourist Visa (if applicable)
  • Travel insurance
  • Personal expenses
  • Guide and porter tips
  • Transportation
  • Shopping and souvenirs
  • Emergency funds

Altitude Considerations

Crossing Thorong La Pass (5,416 m) is one of the biggest challenges of the trek.

Before choosing this trek, ask yourself:

  • Am I comfortable trekking above 5,000 meters?
  • Do I understand the symptoms of altitude sickness?
  • Am I willing to follow proper acclimatization?
  • Can I maintain a slow and steady trekking pace?

Accommodation & Food

Think about your comfort expectations during the trek.

Accommodation includes:

  • Traditional mountain teahouses
  • Twin-sharing rooms
  • Shared bathrooms in most villages
  • Basic but comfortable facilities

Meals generally include:

  • Nepali cuisine
  • Thakali meals
  • Tibetan dishes
  • Indian and Continental food
  • Vegetarian options

Transportation

Travel to the Annapurna Circuit involves both road transportation and trekking.

You'll typically experience:

  • Drive from Kathmandu to Besisahar or Dharapani
  • Trekking through the Annapurna Conservation Area
  • Road journey from Muktinath or Jomsom to Pokhara
  • Return to Kathmandu by road or domestic flight

Road conditions may vary depending on the season, so keeping one or two flexible days is recommended.

Choosing the Right Trekking Company

A reliable trekking company plays an important role in your overall experience.

Look for a company that provides:

  • Government registration and licensing
  • Experienced licensed guides
  • Positive customer reviews
  • Transparent pricing
  • Quality accommodation and transportation
  • Emergency evacuation support
  • 24/7 customer assistance

Essential Questions Before Booking

Ask yourself:

  • Am I physically prepared for this trek?
  • Do I have enough time for proper acclimatization?
  • Have I purchased travel insurance?
  • Do I have the necessary trekking equipment?
  • Does the package include permits, meals, accommodation, and transportation?
  • Have I selected the best season for trekking?
  • Have I allowed extra time for unexpected weather or travel delays?
